Vietnamese students win four medals at Int’l Olympiad in Informatics

TheVietnamese team to the 30th International Olympiad inInformatics (IOI 2018) which took place in Japan from September 1-7 broughthome four medals, the Ministry of Education and Training’s Department ofQuality Management said on September 7.

Pham Duc Thang from the HighSchool for Gifted Students of the University of Science under the VietnamNational University-Hanoi won a gold medal, and Hoang Xuan Nhat from the HighSchool for Gifted Students of the Vietnam National University-HCM City bagged asilver medal.

Meanwhile, two bronze medalsbelonged to Nguyen Hoang Hai Minh and Nguyen Khanh from the High School forGifted Students of the University of Science under the Vietnam NationalUniversity-Hanoi.

The IOI is anannual international informatics competition for individual contestantsfrom various invited countries, accompanied by socialand cultural programs. The IOI is one of the five internationalscience Olympiads, and is one of the most prestigious computerscience competitions in the world. 

The competition tasks are ofalgorithmic nature; however, the contestants have to show such basic IT skillsas problem analysis, design of algorithms and data structures, programming andtesting. 

This year event saw theparticipation of 335 contestants from 87 countries and territories across thefive continents. 167 students won medals, including 29 gold, 55 silver, and 83bronze.

With all four studentswinning medals, the Vietnamese delegation ranked 2nd in theSoutheast Asian region and 12th among the attending countries.
