Effective from July 1st, 2007, until now, the Law on Gender Equality (GE) has come into existence for 10 years. Phu Yen Newspaper interviewed Mrs. Nguyen Thi Tuyet, Vice Chairwoman of Vietnam Women's Union Central Committee, about some issues on implementing GE Law in the province.

* What do you think about implementing GE law in Phu Yen province during the past time?

- It can be said that after 10 years of implementing the Law on GE from July 2007 to present, we highly appreciate the results that Phu Yen province has achieved. It is the propaganda on popularizing the GE Law which has been coordinated by all levels and branches at the provincial level and disseminated to the grassroots level in villages and hamlets. At the same time, we also highly appreciate the training courses on knowledge of this law for staff working on GE and inspection, in coordination with other sectors on deploying and performing.

Specific results are also evident in the work of female staff. The province has the ratio of key staff, female leaders in management departments, accounting for nearly 19%. Since 2012, 13 female officers have been appointed as directors, and over 23 women have been appointed as deputy directors, which is a remarkable result. The female representation of the People's Council for the 2016-2021 period is relatively high.

In areas such as health, education or family activities, there have been very specific results such as establishing "trusted addresses in the community" to support women suffering with violence at home. In the areas of supporting women with economic development also achieved positive results.

* In addition to the obtained results, what is Phu Yen going to pay more attention to in implementing the GE Law for the coming time, Madam?

- I think there are issues we need to care about in the future. It is necessary to strengthen the consolidation of the Committee for the Advancement of Women in departments, sectors. Because it is the staff to advise to the Party committee, the government to implement the task of the GE Law. Although the proportion of female cadres involved in management and leadership is higher than in the past, in order to achieve the goals of the GE Law or the National Strategy for the Advancement of Women, we need to strive to achieve further.

Another problem is that female staff in departments need to be more concerned. Especially in the next term, we also expect the Party committees and authorities to pay more attention to planning, training, fostering, promoting and appointing female cadres to make the ratio of female cadres in the next term to achieve higher results and target.

In the propaganda on the Law on Gender Equality, directives and resolutions of the Party on gender equality, policies related to the Law on Domestic Violence Prevention and Control and the Law on Human Trafficking are very specific. However, there is one difficulty that we see in the propagation of GE in higher levels, if we keep saying the community's perception of GE is very complete, but leaders from different levels at the provincial level, the district level, the grassroots level - those who implement and formulate policies, without fully aware of GE, we have never achieved the results of GE.

Another issue is that the gender mainstreaming is a very important task. Especially in formulating policies to ensure gender equality, incorporate gender elements in building local socio-economic development programs as well as sectoral work plans.
