Joining hands to improve the efficiency of water supply and sanitation in rural areas

Atpresent, 97% of rural population in the province have been provided withhygienic water and 52 communes out of 88 communes have reached the environmentalstandards. This result is thanks to the participation of departments, agencies,localities, units and enterprises have jointly invested in constructing watersupply facilities, promoting waste collection and propagating to raise the awarenessamong the people on keeping environmental sanitation.

According to the ProvincialDepartment of Agriculture and Rural Development, throughout the province, therehave been 78 water supply facilities and many wells in the households,contributing over 97% of the rural population to use clean water. Householdshave a strong sense of building hygienic latrines; therefore, nearly 79% ofhouseholds have got hygienic latrines households, over 87% of households havinghygienic livestock farm; 80.8% of school having clean water and hygieniclatrines.

Compared with the previousyears, the awareness of environmental protection in all social classes has, sofar, changed dramatically. The authorities at all levels are more concernedabout environmental protection when organizing waste collection and treatment. Atthe agencies, units, enterprises and residential areas, the movement of preservingthe green, clean and beautiful environment has been actively responded and becomea regular activity contributing to improving the people's life and protectingthe ecological environment.

Typically, the People'sCommittee in Dong Hoa district deployed the project of gathering andtransporting domestic solid waste, which has basically limited the amount ofwaste having polluted the environment and affected to people's life. Accordingto the People's Committee of Dong Hoa district, in the long term, to expand themodel of domestic waste collection, the local authorities will change from theform of the state management to socialization. As socialization will mobilizebusinesses and economic organizations to participate to modernize equipment,improve collection efficiency.

Mr. Tran Trung Truc,Director of Environment Protection Department (Department of Natural Resourceand Environment), lets known: In the recent time, the unit has supported notonly Dong Hoa district constructing the project of waste collection, but alsoin the communes of An My (Tuy An district), Hoa Dong (Tay Hoa district), Ea Bia(Song Hinh district). In the coming time, the unit will continue to support thecost of building new models in localities, and accompanying with theadministration of communes and districts to tackle domestic waste and improve environmentallandscapes, so that many communes can complete environmental criteria, creatingnew rural faces.

According to Mr. NguyenTrong Tung, Director of the Provincial Department of Agriculture and RuralDevelopment, although the results have been achieved, in some rural areas,people still do not have enough water for living, especially in the hot summerseason. Many households have not got access to clean water from concentratedwater projects, some households still not having toilets to use. It’s existingthe practice of free-range cattle raising or waste disposal indiscriminately...

To tackle the situation andstrive to the end of this year, 97.2% of the rural population will have accessto clean water, about 60 communes out of 88 communes will meet theenvironmental criteria, it’s necessary to further participate from the departments,branches and units. In particular, the Department of Agriculture and RuralDevelopment deploys the project calling for investment and management andexploitation of rural water supply. The Health Department uses the villagehealth force to propagate and guide the community to use hygienic latrines andpractice hand washing with soap, eat cooked meals.
