DPM Minh holds talks with US Secretary of State

DeputyPM, FM Pham Binh Minh highlighted the significance of US Secretary of State’sofficial visit to Vietnam, affirming Vietnam treasures and wishes to boost thecomprehensive partnership with the US in a stable, intensive and effectivemanner.

Minh made the above remarksat his talks with US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo in Ha Noi on Monday.

Pompeo asserted that the USattaches importance to the friendship and comprehensive cooperation with Vietnam.

He expects Vietnam to be astrong, independent and prosperous country that plays an increasingly importantrole in the region.

The two officials showedtheir pleasure at the positive and practical advancements of the bilateralties, agreeing to continue deeping the two countries’ comprehensive ties forthe benefits of the two people and for peace, stabilty, cooperation anddevelopment in the region and the world,

Both sides agreed to givepriority to delegation exchanges, especially at high-level visits and contactswhile continuing to view trade and investment as the driving force for theiroverall relationship.

The pair vowed toeffectively realize defense agreements and foster education and training andpeople-to-people exchanges.

They expressed theirpleasure at the success of the project on dioxin decomtamination at Da Nangairport and the US side will soon launch the similar project at Bien Hoaairport and enhance support for Vietnam to overcome the war consequences.

Regarding regional andinternational issues, including the East Sea situation, the two sides expressedconcerns over the complicated developments in the East Sea during the pasttime.

Both sides reafffirmed theirsupport for peaceful settlement of disputes on the basis of international law,including the 1982 UN Convention on the Law of the Sea, for full implementationof the Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the East Sea (DOC) and forearly conclusion of a Code of Conduct that is effective and legally-bindingone.

Deputy PM, FM Minh and USSecretary of State Pompeo also agreed to continue exchanges and coordination atinternational forums.

They shared the view thatASEAN needs to maintain its central role in addressing regional issues whileASEAN and the US should further strengthen their strategic partnership on afirm and effective basis to contribute to peace, stability, cooperation anddevelopment in the region and the world.

Minh took the occasion tohighly value the efforts made by relevant parties in accelerating peace anddenuclearization process on the Korean Peninsula.

Vietnam backs allconstructive efforts through dialogues toward realizing a denuclearizedKorean Peninsula, pledging to be an active and responsible member of theinternational community in this process.

The same day, the USSecretary of State left Ha Noi, concluding his official visit to Vietnam.
