Vietnam’s SDGs fulfillment to be presented at UN high-level forum

DeputyMinister of Planning and Investment Nguyen The Phuong will present a report onVietnam’s progress in realising sustainable development goals (SDGs) at theUnited Nations High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development thatopened in New York on July 9.

The world has made progressin achieving poverty elimination worldwide, but it requires the utmost effortto reap set targets by 2030, as heard at the event. 

In his opening speech to theevent, UN Under Secretary General for Economic and Social Affairs Liu Zhenminsaid countries have 12 years left to realise the sustainable developmentagenda. 

Three years have passed bysince 193 member states adopted the agenda, many people have enjoyed a betterlife compared to a decade ago. 

The rate of poor householdswas brought down to 9 percent in 2017 from 27 percent in 2000. However, droughtand natural disasters caused by climate change, and escalating conflict inseveral areas are hampering poverty elimination effort. 

The 10-day event attracts over1,000 leaders of governments, companies and civil organisations who willdiscuss the process of realising SDGs. 

Representatives from 47countries will share experience, including success stories, challenges andlessons in the process. 

President of the UN Economicand Social Council Marie Chatardova expressed hope that a joint statement atthe end of the forum will convey a strong political message about internationalcommunity’s efforts to realise the sustainable development agenda by 2030.
