President requests serious handling of economic, corruption cases

PresidentTran Dai Quang asked the Supreme People’s Court to seriously deal with majorcriminal cases, especially those regarding economic activities and corruption,during a teleconference held in Hanoi on January 9.

In his speech, he requestedthe sector improve quality and speed up the settlement of cases, avoid unjustjudgments and miss out criminals.

The President suggested thatthe Supreme People’s Court should build its image of being friendly, close andhelpful to the people; protecting justice, human and citizen rights, socialism,State interests, and legitimate rights and interests of individuals andorganisations. 

On the occasion, the Stateleader praised the court sector for working closely with agencies concerned tothoroughly and cautiously consider cases that went on trial years ago andclaimed innocence, some of them have been justified, thus ensuring legitimaterights and interests of citizens. 

The court reported that anumber of cases were prosecuted promptly and strictly last year.  

From October 1, 2016 –September 30, 2017, courts nationwide dealt with 438,625 cases, equivalent to89.3 percent of the total. The number of cases being handled and alreadyhandled rose by 8.3 percent and 6.1 percent, respectively. The number ofcancelled and revised verdicts accounted for 1.3 percent, meeting the NationalAssembly’s requirement. 

Progress was also seen inthe settlement of civil and administrative cases. Up to 53.3 percent of civilcases were mediated successfully.
