The National ElectionCommittee of Cambodia on August 15 announced the results of the generalelection held on July 29. The CPP won all 125 parliamentary seats.

Sok Eysan said relationsbetween Vietnam and Cambodia are traditional and have gone through ups anddowns over the years.

Meanwhile, opposition andreactionary forces with insular nationalism are still seeking ways to rekindlesome issues between the two countries. Such acts won’t drive a wedge betweenthe nations, he stressed.

He added the CPP defines theVietnam-Cambodia friendship as strategic relations with long-standingfraternity. It will continue enhancing these ties to make them long-term andsustainable relations.

Regarding the election, thespokesman said the CPP won a big victory after overcoming all difficulties, obstacles and sabotage of overseas opposition forces. It considered the win agreat triumph of the Cambodian people.

The election was carried outin a democratic, free, judicious, fair and successful manner, he claimed, noting that more than 83 percent of eligible voters cast ballots. At 22,967polling stations nationwide, many people were queued up to vote before pollseven opened. This showed their desire to vote and decide the country’s destiny,he noted.

That the US and some westernnations assessed the election as undemocratic with the absence of oppositionparties is biased because the US, Australia and the European Union did not sendobservers to this election, he said, adding that such evaluations wereinaccurate and Cambodia cannot accept them.

Sok Eysan went on to saythat his country keeps viewpoints on external relations as enshrined in itsconstitution. Those relations must be based on the respect for each other’sindependence, sovereignty and territorial integrity, equality as members of theUnited Nation and not interfering in each other’s internal affairs.

Cambodia will always be afriend of all countries, regardless of religion and colour, he emphasised.

In the interview, the spokesmansaid since 1998, Cambodia has had a full stability and national conciliationwith a government and state ruled by the King, thus opening up a new and proudera of national development.
