PM to attend ACMECS 8, CLMV 9 in Thailand

PrimeMinister Nguyen Xuan Phuc will lead a Vietnamese delegation to the 8thAyeyawady-Chao Phraya-Mekong Economic Cooperation Strategy Summit (ACMECS 8)and the 9th Cambodia-Laos-Myanmar-Vietnam Summit (CLMV 9) inBangkok, Thailand from June 15-16.

The Ministry of ForeignAffairs announced on June 11 that the attendance will be made at the invitationof Thai Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha and Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen.

ACMECS is a cooperationframework amongst Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, Thailand and Vietnam to utilise themember countries’ diverse strengths and to promote balanced development in thesub-region. It was established in April 2003 under the initiative of then ThaiPrime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra.

Vietnam officially joinedthe summit in 2004 during the first ACMECS ministers’ meeting, which was heldin Thailand in November that year. 

The CLMV is an opencooperation mechanism aiming to promote potential and advantages of Cambodia,Laos, Myanmar and Vietnam, and call for support from other ASEAN countries aswell as partners for the four countries. 

The CLMV Summit was firstheld in 2004.
