PM chairs meeting with Vietnam-Laos Cooperation Committee

PrimeMinister Nguyen Xuan Phuc chaired a meeting with the Vietnam-Laos CooperationCommittee, relevant ministries and sectors on January 13 to discuss theimplementation of the cooperation agreement with Laos last year and plans for2018.

The event was also attendedby Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Pham Binh Minh.

According to a report by theMinistry of Planning and Investment, the two nations exchanged more than 300visits at all levels and saw significant progress in economic cooperation in2017. They have worked together to promptly remove obstacles and step up tradeand investment promotion activities.

Vietnam now ranks thirdamong countries and territories investing in Laos with 276 projects worth about5 billion USD in total. Accumulative disbursement has been estimated at over1.6 billion USD so far, accounting for 32.5 percent of the total Vietnameseinvestment.

Vietnam-Laos trade in thefirst 11 months of 2017 exceeded 808 million USD, up roughly 10 percent from2016.

Joint projects in transportinfrastructure and connectivity have been developed between the two countriesand within the region. The two sides are continuing to seek funding for keyprojects, such as 725-km Hanoi – Vientiane Highway and a railway connectingVung Ang, Tan Ap, Mu Gia (Vietnam) and Thakhec, Vientiane (Laos).

Last year, Vietnam granted1,246 scholarships to Lao students, 246 higher than the number pledged by thetwo Governments.

PM Phuc said that 2017 was ayear of solidarity between the two countries and both sides successfullyorganised grand ceremonies to mark 55th founding anniversary ofdiplomatic ties and 40 years since the signing of the Vietnam-Laos Treaty onAmity and Cooperation.

The two nations shouldpromote bilateral cooperation in various fields, he said, asking relevant sidesto effectively coordinate to carefully prepare for the 40th meetingof the Vietnam-Laos Inter-governmental Committee for Bilateral Cooperation tobe held later this year. 

Vietnam will continue itssupport for Laos in socio-economic development, he noted, adding thatinspections must be carried out to accelerate the progress of some keycooperation projects.
