PM calls for regulated management of reservoirs along Mekong river

PMNguyen Xuan Phuc called for formation of regulations to manage operation ofreservoirs along the Mekong river while attending the second Mekong-LancangCooperation (MLC) Summit in Phnom Penh, Cambodia on Wednesday.

Highlighting Vietnam’sstance and contributions toward the MLC mechanism over the past time, theVietnamese Government chief emphasized the major principles and goals that mustbe ensured so that the mechanism could make positive contributions tosocio-economic development in each country and promote peace, stability andprosperity of the whole region.

He asked the relevantcountries to enhance cooperation in protecting, managing and using theMekong water resources in an effective and sustainable manner while developinginfrastructure systems to facilitate the movement of goods and services in theregion.

The summit, which drew theparticipation of the Government leaders of six countries, namely Cambodia,Laos, Myanmar, Thailand, China and Vietnam, aims to review the outcomes ofcooperation since the first summit held in China in March 2016 and shapecooperation orientations for the coming time.

Regarding the futurecooperation, the leaders reaffirmed their commitments to pursue goal ofbuilding the Mekong-Lancang region of peace, stability, sustainable andprosperous development.

They agreed that  theMLC needs to make more positive contributions to socio-economic development inthe region and development gap reduction among the member countries.

The leaders approved thePhnom Penh Declaration and a five-year Action plan for the period of 2018-2022;agreed to foster cooperation in managing and using sustainably the Mekong waterresources through policy dialogues, development and improvement of waterresource monitoring system, information sharing, technical cooperation amongothers.
