PM praises WB, IMF’s support for Vietnam’s development

TheVietnamese Government appreciates consultations of the World Bank (WB) and theInternational Monetary Fund (IMF) on the management of the macro-economicpolicy in Vietnam, helping the country maintain macro-economic stability andlow inflation rate, Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc said.

The Vietnamese leader hadseparate meetings with the WB’s Chief Executive Officer KristalinaGeorgieva and Managing Director of the International MonetaryFund (IMF) Christine Lagarde in Quebec, Canada right after attendingthe Group of Seven (G7) Outreach Summit. 

PM Phuc called on the WB tofacilitate Vietnam’s access to preferential loans, while assisting the countryin infrastructure development, climate change response and povertyreduction. 

He reiterated Vietnam’scommitment to the effective use of the International Development Association(IDA) loans. 

The PM also suggested theIMF coordinate in monitoring and assessing Vietnam’s macro-economy, continue togive consultations to the Vietnamese Government on managing the macro-economy,perfecting fiscal and monetary tools and restructuring the banking-financialsector, as well as provide more technical support for the country in thesustainable State budget management. 

Both WB and IMF leadersexpressed their delight at achievements Vietnam has recorded over the pasttime, lauding the country’s macro-economic stability and rosy growth rateamidst uncertainties and risks of the global economy. 

WB CEO Kristalina Georgievapledged that the WB will continue its assistance to Vietnam, especially inimproving investment environment and developing clean and renewable energies.

Meanwhile, IMF ManagingDirector Christine Lagarde promised that she and the fund will stronglysupport and accompany Vietnam in the reform process. 

On this occasion, PM Phucinvited the WB and IMF leaders to attend the World Economic Forum on ASEAN,which is scheduled to take place in Vietnam in September 2018. 

The same day, PM Phuc metwith UN Secretary General António Guterres, during which the Vietnameseleader spoke highly of and showed his support for the UN leader’s contributionsto promoting preventive diplomacy, preventing conflicts and addressing disputesby peaceful measures on the basis of respect for the UN Charter andinternational law.

Vietnam has activelyparticipated in the UN’s common activities, he said, emphasising the country’ssupport for the UN reform towards more efficiency, transparency anddemocratisation. 

The PM appealed to the UNSecretary General to back Vietnam’s bid to run for a non-permanent seat at theUN Security Council for 2020-2021. 

In reply, António Guterressaid he hopes to see Vietnam become an active member of the council. 

PM also invited the UNSecretary General to attend the World Economic Forum on ASEAN and visitVietnam. António Guterres accepted the invitation with pleasure. 

At these bilateral meetings,PM Phuc and leaders of the international organisations compared notes onregional and international issues of shared concern.
