ASEAN, Australia sign MoU on counter-terrorism

Officialsof Australia and the ASEAN member states signed a Memorandum of Understanding(MoU) on strengthening cooperation to counter international terrorism withinthe framework of the ASEAN – Australia Special Summit in Sydney, Australia onMarch 17.

The signing ceremony tookplace under the witness of ASEAN leaders and Australian Prime Minister MalcolmTurnbull. 

The MoU is considered ahistoric breakthrough contributing to strengthening the two sides’collaboration in ensuring regional security. 

Via signed frameworkagreements, ASEAN and Australia agreed to enhance counter-terrorism cooperationin terrorist financing and violent extremism. 

Australia committed tomaintaining annual dialogues between its government, security and lawenforcement agencies with ASEAN to seek practical measures to safeguardregional security. 

The document featuresvarious initiatives and framework agreements covering engineering,anti-terrorism law building, regional dialogues and seminars on electronicevidence, financial intelligence and ways to tackle online radicalization.
