Mekong-Lancang cooperation media summit opens in Laos

TheMekong-Lancang cooperation (MLC) media summit kicked off in the Lao capitalcity of Vientiane on July 2.

Themed “Cooperation in theLancang-Mekong Community for a Bright Future”, the summit brought togethersenior media representatives from Cambodia, China, Laos, Myanmar, Thailand, andVietnam.

In his opening remarks, KikeoKhaykhamphithoune, head of the Lao People’s Revolutionary Party CentralCommittee’s Commission for Propaganda and Training, said the summit is of greatsignificance as it helps promote cooperation and understanding between peopleand press agencies of the participating countries, thus creating a foundationto realise the common goals reached by leaders of the relevant countries on thebasis of the MLC framework. 

At the second MLC LeadersMeeting which took place in Phnom Penh, Cambodia earlier this year, the headsof states approved the Phnom Penh Declaration and the Five-Year Plan of Actionfor 2018-2022 with major orientations and measures to implement cooperation onthe three pillars of security-politics; economy and sustainable development;society, culture, and people-to-people exchange.

The summit was jointly heldby the Lao Ministry of Information, Culture, and Tourism alongside Chinesenewspaper People’s Daily. 

The delegates are expectedto work in groups on July 3 to discuss strengthening their cooperation inmedia, especially new media, and tourism promotion. 

The MLC is a sub-regionalcooperation mechanism that was jointly established in 2016 by six countriesalong the Mekong River, namely Cambodia, China, Laos, Myanmar, Thailand, andVietnam.
