UN Security Council condemns bombing series in Indonesia

TheUnited Nations Security Council has condemned the latest series of bombings inIndonesia.

“The members of the SecurityCouncil condemned in the strongest terms the heinous and cowardly terroristattacks on Christian churches and a police station that took place in Surabaya,Indonesia, on 13 and 14 May, which resulted in at least 18 peoplekilled and many more injured”, the Security Council’s press statement said.

The council affirmed thatterrorism in all its forms and manifestations constitutes one of the mostserious threats to international peace and security. It reiterated that anyacts of terrorism are criminal and unjustifiable, regardless of theirmotivation, wherever, whenever and by whomsoever committed.

It urges that perpetrators,organizers, financiers and sponsors of these reprehensible acts of terrorism beheld accountable and brought to justice.

The council also calls onall States, in accordance with their obligations under international law andrelevant Security Council resolutions, to cooperate actively with the Governmentof Indonesia and all other relevant authorities in this regard.

The members of the SecurityCouncil expressed their deepest sympathy and condolences to the families of thevictims and to the Government of Indonesia, and they wished a speedy and fullrecovery to those who were injured.

On March 13, a series ofbombings hit three Christian churches in Surabaya, East Java province, killing14 and injuring dozens of others. Indonesia police said later the same day thatthe bombings were conducted by a family of six, including four children aged 9to 18.

Just one day later, anotherblast took place at the police headquarters in Surabaya city on May 14 morning,injuring several police officers. Police said a family of five, including an8-year-old girl, was the perpetrators of the attack. 

The self-claimed IslamicState (IS) claimed responsibility for the attacks through its Amaq news agency.

Indonesia raised securityalert status to the highest level at major cities and regions in Indonesia,including Jakarta capital, Riau islands, East Java and Bali island, after theseries of bomb attacks on May 13.
