ASEAN and EU foster security cooperation

The25th meeting of the ASEAN-EU Joint Cooperation Committee has beenheld at the ASEAN Secretariat headquarters in Jakarta, Indonesia during whichthe two blocs agreed to enhance effectiveness of cooperation in traditional andnon-traditional security.

The event was the firstmeeting between the Committee of Permanent Representativesto ASEAN (CPR) and the association’s partners in 2018 to review tiesbetween ASEAN and each partner.

Both sides highlighted that2017 marked the 40th anniversary of ASEAN – EU Dialogue Relations and the 50thfounding anniversary of ASEAN.

The two sides welcomed thefinal assessment of the implementation of the Bandar Seri Begawan Action toStrengthen the ASEAN – EU Enhanced Partnership (2013-2017), and the adoption ofthe successor ASEAN-EU Plan of Action (2018-2022) in Manila in August 2017.

The EU affirmed to continuesupporting the central role of ASEAN in the regional architecture, and pledgedto assist ASEAN projects and development programmes.

The EU head delegate saidthe attendance of President of the European Council Donald Tusk at the ASEANSummit in November 2017 as guest the ASEAN Chairman reflected the EU’sstrong commitment to the region. He hoped that the two sides will continueworking together to lift the relations to a new height.

ASEAN updated delegates onthe regional situation over the past years, including the outcomes of theimplementation of the ASEAN Community Vision 2025 and a Blueprint onthe three pillars of politics-security, economy and socio-culture.

The association called onthe two sides to forge their cooperation for peace, security, stability andprosperity in the region.

The 26th meetingis scheduled for early 2019.

The January 30 meeting wasco-chaired by Ambassador of Thailand to ASEAN Phasporn Sangasubana, who is alsothe Country Coordinator for the ASEAN-EU Dialogue Relations, and David Daly,Head of the Southeast Asia Division of the European External Action Service.
