Vietnam shares experience in green agriculture at ECOSOC forum

AmbassadorDang Dinh Quy, head of Vietnam’s permanent mission to the United Nations (UN),presented the country’s policies to promote green agriculture at a sidelineevent of the High-level Political Forum of the UN Economic and Social Council(ECOSOC) in New York on July 11.

The event was co-organisedby Thailand, Vietnam, Bhutan, the EU, UNEP and Switch Asia.

Ambassador Quy highlightedVietnam’s achievements in agriculture as well as challenges that the country isfacing to ensure sustainable development such as low productivity andenvironmental impacts due to the use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides.

The diplomat emphasised theimportance of concrete initiatives to bring policies into life, including theapplication of Vietnamese Good Agricultural Practice (VietGAP) to help increaseproductivity, mitigate environmental impacts, and raise incomes for farmers.

Participants shared theircountries’ solutions to promoting a green economy and sustainable productionand consumption models that benefit people and minimise environmental impacts.

A representative fromThailand underlined the role of building policy frameworks to promote greeneconomy and efforts to realize these policies, especially in rural areas.

Meanwhile, a delegate fromBhutan shared the country’s “High Value, Low Impact” tourism policy and itsapproach based on the Gross National Happiness (GNH) index in building aprosperous country.

A representative from the EUreferred to the Circular Economy that helps minimise waste in production andconsumption. 

The UNEP underlined itscooperation efforts with the private sector to boost plastic recyclingsolutions and gradually eliminate the use of plastic products.
