Fruit, veggie exports estimated at 321 million USD in January

Vietnamearned some 321 million USD from fruit and vegetable exports in January 2018,rising by 36.9 percent from the same period last year, according to theMinistry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD).

China, Japan, the US and theRepublic of Korea remained the biggest importers of Vietnamese fruits andvegetables in the month. The markets with soaring imports from Vietnam wereJapan (69.3 percent), the United Arab Emirates (56.3 percent), and China (52.4percent).

Meanwhile, the countryimported 152 million USD worth of these commodities in January, of which fruitsaccounted for 76 percent.

The Ministry said thedomestic fruit market saw great fluctuations, with a rise in the price ofdragon fruit in the Mekong Delta region.

The trend is expected tocontinue in the lead-up to the Lunar New Year (Tet) festival.

Prices of star apples andjack fruits also climbed up, reaching 15,000 VND (0.7 USD) and 43,000 VND (1.9USD) per kg due to increasing demand for these two products in the US andChina, respectively.

Meanwhile, orange prices in the Mekong Delta region fell dramatically due toabundant supply and the crops face diseases.

Prices of several vegetablesalso dropped in the Central Highlands province of Lam Dong due to high supplyfueled by favourable weather.
