Smart tourism in the 4.0 industrial revolution

Onthe occasion of World Tourism Day (September 27th), Mr. ZurabPololikashvili, Secretary-General of the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO),sent a message: "The World Tourism Day highlights the need for investmentin disruptive digital technologies that can help foster an environment forinnovation and entrepreneurship in tourism". This means that the tourismsector needs to equip and apply smart technology in the global context with the4.0 revolution.

The 4.0 revolution does notonly affect the industrial and commodity production but also all socio-economicsectors. The application of technology and electronics into tourism has becomean indispensable condition for creating numerous new attractive tourismproducts, stimulating the growth and development of tourism worldwide,including Vietnam.

Applying technology inbusiness and tourism in Vietnamin general and Phu Yen in particular initially brings about positive results.However, the application of smart technology still has certain limitations.According to Vietnam National Administration of Tourism, only over 50% ofdomestic travel agencies have successfully applied sales and payment online.

As for Phu Yen, according tothe Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism (DCST), the tourism units havequite large scale; over 90% of 3-5 star hotels have websites to introduce andpromote products; about 50% of units apply sale, payment online and join somee-trading floors such as Agoda, Booking, Tripi.vn, gotadi.vn, ivivu.com...

The remaining small unitsmainly use available support tools of social networks (Facebook, Zalo ...). Asfor state management agencies, PhuYen TourismPromotion Centermanages Phu Yen tourism website, coordinates with the Tourism Association tomanage smart Webgis of Phu Yen tourism and use social networks (fanpage,Facebook, messenger, Zalo, email...) to connect, give information to tourismunits and associating with tourism promotion as well.

The DCST has a website ofonline public administrative of the province, providing online public servicesvia the internet, including 31 out of 107 administrative procedures at level 3and implementing some at level 4; using e-office software, inter-connection,management with internal e- documents...

Mr. Pham Van Bay, DeputyDirector of Phu Yen DCST affirms that IT application in tourism is one of thebreakthrough solutions for Phu Yen tourism to develop quickly and sustainably,improving competitiveness. This will be an effective tool for management oftourism activities, including state management and tourism destinationmanagement, tourism marketing, serving suppliers (meals, accommodation,transportation, travel ...) and tourists.

"The DCST has workedwith some suppliers of software applied information technology to developdigital conversion strategies, building database and digitizing tourismresources, maps of tourism destinations, system of tourism services in theprovince. The application of smart software will bring benefits to managementagencies, tourism units and tourists. Encouraging enterprises to apply salesand payment online; using modern technology to reduce labor costs, connecttours and routes, increase tourists and business performance...”, said Mr. Bay.
